Tell it by Heart

Date: May, 2017

Client: School project

A drawing roughly four years in the making, this uses the visual shape of the human heart to tell an almost cyclical story of being lost in heartbreak. The title comes from the gorgeous instrumental piece by Jami Sieber. The visuals take some inspiration from B. A. Johnston’s “I Almost Stole Your Pants” (the Lock St. 7 references) and the music video for Adam Ant’s “Wonderful.”

The original drawings came into being while recovering from fights with my then-partner. The illustration challenge given in class was to revisit an old drawing and update it. As I was processing breaking up with said partner earlier in the year, this seemed like the right choice. The center of the larger piece comes from Tell It By Heart 2, trading the German Expressionist shadows for muted comic book colours to replace the menace with the aftermath.
